OpenGnothia App Privacy Policy
Last updated: May 19, 2026
This policy describes how the OpenGnothia macOS desktop application ("App") handles your data. It is separate from the OpenGnothia website privacy policy.
1. What This Policy Covers
This policy applies only to the OpenGnothia macOS application distributed via the Mac App Store. For information about the opengnothia.com website, please see our website Privacy Policy.
2. We Do Not Operate Servers or Collect Personal Data
OpenGnothia does not require registration, an account, or a login. We do not operate any backend servers, do not collect analytics or telemetry, and do not track usage. We have no ability to access your data because your data never passes through us.
3. Data Stored Locally on Your Mac
All content you create in the App is stored exclusively on your device, inside the App's sandboxed container at ~/Library/Containers/com.opengnothia.app/. This includes:
- Journal entries, reflection session transcripts, dream records, and mood entries
- Onboarding answers and interview responses
- Selected reflective perspective and program progress
- Application preferences (language, theme, AI provider settings, model selection)
- The API keys you provide for third-party AI providers
When you uninstall the App from your Mac, this data is removed by the operating system.
4. Third-Party AI Providers
When you invoke AI features in the App, the relevant content (your prompt and conversation context) is sent directly from your Mac to the AI provider you have configured, using the API key you provide. We do not see, receive, or intermediate these requests. The currently supported providers are:
- OpenAI (chat models and Whisper transcription) — openai.com/policies
- Anthropic (Claude models) — anthropic.com/legal/privacy
- Google (Gemini models) — policies.google.com/privacy
- Any other OpenAI-compatible endpoint you choose to configure (for example, a local model running via Ollama or LM Studio)
Each provider has its own privacy policy and data-handling practices. We encourage you to read them before sending sensitive content. Your contractual relationship for AI usage is directly with the provider you choose, not with us.
5. macOS Permissions Used
The App runs inside the macOS sandbox and requests the minimum permissions necessary to function:
- Microphone: only used when you choose to dictate a journal entry or session message. The audio is transcribed to text by your configured speech-to-text provider (typically OpenAI Whisper) and is not stored by the App.
- User-selected file access: only when you explicitly export or import a backup file via the system file dialog.
- Outgoing network connections: only used to call the AI provider endpoints you have configured.
- Local biometric authentication (Touch ID): optional. Your biometric data never leaves Apple's Secure Enclave and is not accessible to the App.
6. Children's Privacy
The App is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal data from anyone, including children, because we do not collect personal data at all.
7. Your Rights and Controls
Because all your data lives on your device, you have full control:
- Export: download all your data as a single JSON file from Settings → Data → Export.
- Delete all: clear all stored data from Settings → Data → Clear All Data, or by uninstalling the App.
- Modify: edit or delete any individual entry directly within the App.
8. Changes to This Policy
We may update this policy from time to time, for example when new App features change which permissions are needed or which third-party providers are available. Substantive changes will be reflected in the "Last updated" date above. We recommend checking this page before each new App version.
9. Contact
For privacy-related questions about the App, you can reach the developer:
