About

I've been thinking about this idea for about 3–4 years. I've been in therapy for a long time myself, and I've always been fascinated by the process of observing your own thoughts and the concept of therapy itself.

The name comes from the ancient Greek maxim "Gnothi Seauton" — "Know Thyself." It was inscribed at the entrance of the Temple of Delphi, and it's been humanity's most fundamental call to self-awareness for thousands of years. OpenGnothia is my attempt to bridge that ancient wisdom with modern AI.

Initially I wanted to build a mobile app. I worked on it for a while but eventually shelved it. After Claude Code came along, I realized this was something I could actually build alongside my full-time job. The reason I chose to make it a desktop app is that I believe therapy — unlike a quick phone interaction — should be something where you sit down and truly be alone with your thoughts.

One thing I noticed during my own therapy sessions is that therapists are essentially experts at asking the right questions. That insight became the core of this project. I've been using the app myself for a while now, running sessions with Opus and extended thinking — and honestly, it works.

The app itself even helped motivate me along the way. At one point I thought the whole project was pointless and wanted to quit. But during a session, Opus pointed out that this wasn't really about the app — it was one of my own recurring patterns. It encouraged me to finish and ship it. So here we are 😄

The more I used it, the more it learned about me. It's now become part of my daily routine — I spend 15–20 minutes every day doing a session with it.

I'm planning to add voice features and more improvements over time. Will keep building whenever I find the time.
